The Seventh SHKP Vertical Run for Charity Registration Opens

Inspiring the Entire City to Exercise for Good

2018-07-11

The seventh SHKP Vertical Run for Charity, organized by Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP), opened registration for the event starting today (11 July).  The ‘Race to Hong Kong ICC’ and the ‘Race to Shanghai IFC’ will be held on 2 December and 14 October respectively, with Hong Kong once again be the last event of this year’s Vertical World Circuit.  The finale will bring together elite runners from all over the world, racing to the top of Hong Kong’s tallest building, International Commerce Centre (ICC), in search of world titles.  In keeping with SHKP’s belief in ‘Building Homes with Heart’ and merging sporting events with charity endeavours, all proceeds raised from the races without deducting any cost will be donated as in previous years.

SHKP Executive Director and Deputy Managing Director Mr. Victor Lui, Executive Director Mr. Christopher Kwok and Event Organizing Committee Co-chairman Mr. Edward Cheung BBS officiated the kick-off ceremony at the sky100 Hong Kong Observation Deck today, joined by guests including International Skyrunning Federation President Mr. Marino Giacometti and Associate Professor of Hong Kong Baptist University’s Department of Physical Education Dr. Lobo Louie.  Former event participants, including 75-year-old runner Mr. Leung Ping-fun, the Tai O Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College relay team members, and two families, who participated multiple times, attended the ceremony as well to share their experiences.

At the ceremony, Mr. Victor Lui reaffirmed SHKP’s long-held belief in ‘Building Homes with Heart’.  By organizing a variety of charity sporting events, SHKP is actively committed to supporting worthy causes while encouraging a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.  Over the past seven years, the SHKP Vertical Run for Charity has raised over HK$38 million, benefiting tens of thousands of children and young people.  This year, a host of community activities have been planned to further promote the benefits of vertical running and exercising for good to the general public, and proceeds from the ‘Race to Hong Kong ICC’ will go to The Hong Kong Council of Social Service and The Community Chest of Hong Kong to support children and youth services in the local community.

Vertical Running for All

Now in its seventh year, the race will feature four categories, ‘Elite’, ‘Individual’, ‘Team Relay’, and ‘Fun Climb’.  The ‘Team Relay’ category includes ‘Corporate’, ‘Open’, ‘Secondary Students’ and ‘Tertiary Students’.    The ‘Fun Climb’ event, most appropriate for families, is open to those aged 10 or above and lets participants choose between running 82 floors or 21 floors for leisure.

Chance for Top Hong Kong Runners to Race Overseas; Early-bird Specials

SHKP encourages the participation of sports enthusiasts and supports elite local runners to race overseas.  Winners of this year’s men’s and women’s divisions will again receive sponsorships from SHKP to travel overseas and compete in Vertical World Circuit races next year.  Those who register for ‘Individual’, ‘Team Relay’ or ‘Fun Climb’ on or before 3 August will enjoy an early-bird discount.

Diverse Community Activities; Professional Training for Runners

To further promote the benefits of vertical running and exercising for good, SHKP will organize a series of activities such as ‘Step-Up for Wellness’ in its residential estates and ‘Step-Up for Health’, encouraging people to do sport for charity.  There will additionally be flash mobs to gear up the city for vertical running, ‘Race to Hong Kong ICC - Family Fitness Fun’ in shopping malls encouraging parents and children in sport and sessions offering comprehensive, effective training to prepare participants for the races.

All Proceeds Go to Support Disadvantaged Children and Youths

‘SHKP Vertical Run for Charity’ is not only a sporting activity, but also a signature event on the charity calendar.  Proceeds from the ‘Race to Hong Kong ICC’ will go to the SHKP Rainbow for KIDS Programme developed by The Hong Council of Social Service which supports children and young people who have encountered a family crisis and need counselling. Proceeds will also go to the Community Chest of Hong Kong in support of services for disadvantaged children and young people.  Proceeds from the ‘Race to Shanghai IFC’ will be donated to the Shanghai Children’s Health Foundation to help provide treatment for child patients from underprivileged families.
